CDR King Scientific Calculator [CAL-036-PUH(TS-82TL)]

INTRODUCTION

Recently, I bought this scientific calculator for a friend of mine. Here is the product page for you to see the product's specifications. This scientific calculator comes only in two colors, pink and purple. I got the pink one because the purple color is out of stock.

Now, I have always wanted to review a product from CDR King just for fun, but you might get some useful information when you plan to buy this product from CDR King.

PRICE

This scientific calculator is extremely cheap for a two line display, because usually a two line display calculator from Casio costs around ~800 PHP (20 USD) while the calculator from CDR King costs only 100 PHP (3 USD). And that is a fully functioning two line display calculator with all the necessary functions for a scientific calculator!

CONTENTS

What you get from this product is the scientific calculator, an instruction manual, and two AA CDR King batteries.

BUILD QUALITY

The material of this calculator is plastic, a fairly cheap kind of plastic. When you first try to hold this calculator, it feels very brittle and might break apart very soon. A good test of durability is making it fall of a table. A calculator (like my Casio fx-991 MS) usually falls of a three feet table and survives the fall numerous times. I could not tell if this calculator could survive such fall because I will give it to my friend.

The overall look of the calculator is decent. It looks very simple when the calculator is covered. They change some of the button arrangement, and it might take some getting used to.

The calculator is powered by two AA batteries, usually a scientific calculator is powered by a button cell battery.

FUNCTIONALITY

I was very surprised on how responsive the calculator was (I tested it using the rapid button pressing test where you alternately press two numbers rapidly and see if the calculator can handle it with no delay or lag). Although the buttons of the calculator feels very stiff, it needs some force to activate the button switch. Also the display of the calculator looks a bit faded under normal light.

COMPARISON

I compared the CDR King scientific calculator to my Casio scientific calculator (fx-991MS) for us to know how well the CDR King functions when compared to more known scientific calculator models of the same type.

The CDR King calculator is thicker and larger than the Casio calculator. Making the CDR King calculator a bit more difficult to hold. The Casio calculator feels more solid than the CDR King calculator.

The way on how the CDR King calculator removes its cover is unique from others. It goes upward, not downward.

Removing the cover on the CDR King calculator requires more force than usual because of the build quality.

(It does not include a formula sheet under the cover)

The display on the CDR King calculator looks a lot less cleaner when you normally look at it. It also lacks an LCD screen plastic protector.
(There's no such thing as S-V.S.A.M. when I googled it)
The buttons on the Casio respond with a soft touch, whilst the CDR King does not.

CONCLUSION

The CDR King calculator has a cheap build quality but has all the functionality. It is suited for students with basic mathematical needs for their school work. At first I thought this would be a slow and unreliable calculator, but I was wrong. It was actually a pretty decent calculator, and with care it could last for a long time.

So is the CDR King calculator a good buy?

Yes. It is a good buy if you are looking to buy an extremely cheap calculator, or if you want a spare calculator because people always "borrow" your calculator.
